Central Lake County JAWA Lake Michigan Water Supply

Lake County, Illinois

type:
Civil, Utilities, Water
services:
Planning, Feasibility study, Lake Michigan Allocation Applications for each community

This project began in when ATI developed a long-term plan to assist 10 communities in Lake County, Illinois in changing their municipal water sources. Their ground water aquifers were experiencing a number of issues, including excessive hardness, high iron concentrations, radium contamination, and declining ground water elevations,

ATI assisted the communities with several tasks to begin the intensive process of obtaining Lake Michigan water:

  • Submitted Lake Michigan Water Allocation Applications
  • Conducted capital and O&M cost evaluations
  • Calculated water rate impacts
  • Attended and presented at public hearings

Though we were successful in obtaining allocations for each community, the process was long from over! The Central Lake County Joint Action Water Agency (CLCJAWA) was formed by 4 communities:  Fox Lake Hills, Grandwood Park, Lake Villa, and Lindenhurst. ATI evaluated, walked, and documented eight alternative routes, prepared cost comparisons, and secured funding for CLCJAWA. Ten years later, project design continues and we are preparing for construction.
